Medina Convenes Trade Hearing for Inland Empire
Creating Jobs in the Region
I led a Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee oversight hearing focused on the role of foreign trade and investment on the economy of the Inland Empire.
I was pleased to gather experts and leaders in the economy and business for this informative hearing. Regional collaborations in the Inland Empire continue to have an increasing influence on foreign trade and investment. Economic development partnerships working together will strengthen the region for decades to come.
During the course of the hearing, testimony was provided by economic development experts, business leaders, and other key regional stakeholders.
“Riverside County has established itself as a world leader and a destination for international investment and is amongst the undisputed national leaders in exports,” said Commissioner Tom Freeman, Office of Foreign Trade-EDA County of Riverside.
"Research universities support foreign trade and investment in a number of ways: by training future leaders through workforce development as well as attracting companies who want to be in close proximity to the university," said Dr. Michael Pazzani, Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, UC Riverside.
The Inland Empire is staged to become even more closely linked to trade with Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s recent designation of an Innovation Hub (iHub), the Inland SoCal iHub. The new iHub will help attract new foreign investment, while also working on goods movement and logistical issues within the area, which includes the Ontario Airport, manufacturers, warehousing, the Los Angeles Airport, Los Angeles/Long Beach seaports, and regional highways.
"I want to commend the leadership of Assemblymember Medina for choosing to host this timely JEDE committee hearing on international trade in the Inland Empire,” said Dr. Imran Farooq, Chief Advisor for the Inland SoCal Link iHub. “Our region is poised to address challenges such as the Panama Canal expansion. This hearing will be a great platform to showcase our proactive economic development initiatives to inform future state policy."
Recommendations from the hearing will be considered as we continue advocating for the Inland Empire, improving business fundamentals, and enhancing the Inland Empire’s infrastructure and linkages to global markets.

Assemblymember Medina Protects Seniors
Participants at the Senior Scam Stopper Seminar received educational materials and were able to get their questions answered.
I hosted a Senior Scam Stopper Seminar in Riverside with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB).
I am pleased to have been able to host this critical and informative event. It is essential to provide seniors with tools to assist them in avoiding scams and to become familiar with prevention strategies.
The seminar consisted of a panel of experts from the Contractors State License Board. During the seminar, the panel of experts discussed ways to prevent identity theft, telephone fraud, as well as identifying home and auto repair scams. Participants were also given an opportunity to have their questions answered.
The event was well attended and favorably received. Useful and educational materials were made available by the panel. This is the second Senior Scam Stopper Seminar event hosted by the Assemblymember to educate the community.
It was a pleasure meeting with participants in Riverside to discuss important information on how to protect oneself from various scams and fraud.
