District Update

I hope you had a happy holiday season spent with family and loved ones. As we embark on 2019, it is important to remember to take care of one's health. In mid-November I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a temporary condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves. I was lucky to receive top-notch treatment at UC Irvine’s Hospital and heal quickly. This episode serves as a reminder to take care of one's health and well-being, especially as we head into a busy new year.

I send my best wishes for a successful year to students, administrators, faculty, and fellow teachers as they transition back to the classroom. Included in this newsletter are updates on many of our legislative and budget successes for the 2018 session, as well as upcoming events in the district.

This past month has been a difficult time for our district as we discovered the horrific violence that occurred at a home in Perris. I am grateful for the way our community rallied to support these siblings, whether by making care packages, raising money, or donating funds. These kind acts and contributions speak to the comradery and generous spirit we have in Assembly District 61. I am proud to live in such a compassionate community.

As we enter the month of November, we celebrate Veterans Day and acknowledge the sacrifices all veterans have made for our country. In that same spirit of gratitude, we also celebrate Thanksgiving this month. This continues to be a day for us to come together around the table with our friends and family, to celebrate each other and express appreciation.

While it is truly an honor that I regularly appreciate, I would like to take this opportunity to share my gratitude to you for allowing me to serve as your Assembly representative. As always, if you have comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,

During the month of October, we have much to celebrate and honor. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month—increasing education on a disease that affects millions.

In October we also celebrate Black Poetry Day through a recollection of history and arts. Schools across the country are celebrating Red Ribbon week to support the nation's families and communities in nurturing the full potential of a healthy, drug-free youth. As the month ends, we will have Halloween, and I urge everyone to be safe while enjoying festivities with their families.

As always, if you have comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office. It is a privilege to be your representative for the 61st Assembly District.

Sincerely,

During the month of September, we honor our workers, remember the tragic events of September 11th, and celebrate the founding of the United States Air Force.

On Labor Day, we proudly honor the American labor movement and the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of our country.

During this month, we also remind ourselves to never forget those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 – the day our nation suffered one of the worst terrorist attacks in its history.

Lastly, on September 18th, we mark the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the United States Air Force. I would like to wish the Air Force and all of its members a very happy birthday, especially those serving at the March Air Reserve Base today!

As always, if you have comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office. It is a privilege to be your representative for the 61st Assembly District.

Sincerely,

August is the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited racial discrimination in voting, and reminds us of the foundational importance that voting has in our democracy. This August, we will also experience a total eclipse of the sun; the last time this happened in the contiguous United States was 1979. While our power grid will certainly function as normal, small steps to conserve energy during the eclipse will ease additional stress on the grid.

July 2017 Medina Messenger

Dear Friend,

July is an important month in American history. We celebrate our county’s independence on July 4, when thirteen colonies declared themselves a nation.  Almost two hundred years later, on July 2 1964, the Civil Rights Act was enacted, outlawing discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.  And yet another step forward was taken on July 26, 1990 with the Americans with Disabilities Act, which protected the rights of millions of Americans with physical and mental disabilities.

While we celebrate the landmark steps our country has taken in the past, I hope they remind us of how much we have yet to do. As always, if you have comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office. It is a privilege to be your representative for the 61st Assembly District.

Sincerely,
