The Gabriel Acosta Memorial Journalism and Communication Workshop

“The Gabriel Acosta Memorial Journalism and Communication Workshop is named after the Riverside native news photographer who died in September of 2013. Gabriel Acosta had worked with youth interested in photojournalism through the California Chicano News Media Association’s Inland Chapter by instructing students in photography, helping organize journalism workshops, and stage scholarship banquets.

In honor of Gabriel Acosta’s passion for journalism and education, Assembly Member Jose Medina hosted the free journalism and communications workshop for high school students at Riverside City College on May 17th & 18th. The journalism and communication workshop offered sessions in writing, photography, online journalism and television/radio news. Lunch and refreshments were provided at the workshop which ran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. High school students got to hear and interact with professional journalists as instructors and speakers. Some featured journalist included Rob McMillian from Eyewitness News Inland Empire Bureau Chief, Michael Coronado, Editor at the Press-Enterprise, and Mark Acosta, Metro-Editor at the Press-Enterprise and brother of Gabriel Acosta.

Assembly Member Jose Medina looks forward to hosting the Gabriel Acosta Journalism and Communication workshop annually for many years to come.”
