August 2013 Medina Report
A NOTE FROM JOSE
This month, I am pleased to announce the inaugural class of students attending the UC Riverside School of Medicine. On Friday, August 9, a white coat ceremony will be held to recognize the first 50 students of the School of Medicine. The school is receiving $15 million of full and continuous funding through the state budget and the residents of the Inland Empire will finally begin to see their health care needs fulfilled. This is a historic time for our health, economy and the education of Inland Empire residents.
It was wonderful to have so many of you at our Senior Scam Stopper Seminar. Thank you for helping to make it such a successful and informative event.

UC RIVERSIDE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE WHITE COAT CEREMONY
On July 11, UC Riverside School of Medicine Dean G. Richard Olds presented honorary physicians' white coats to Senator Richard Roth and me for our tireless efforts to provide $15 million annually in state funding for the school.
I am pleased to announce the inaugural class of 50 students attending the UC Riverside School of Medicine by participating in a white coat ceremony on Friday, August 9. The white coat ceremony is a ritual in many medical schools to mark a student's transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences. The ceremony is a time to recognize students for their academic success and to wish them well on their journey through medical school.
In funding the UC Riverside School of Medicine, we take a major step forward to meet our community’s critical need for doctors and health care providers in an area where our working families have been neglected for far too long. The Medical School will also advance the economic competitiveness of the region, bringing much needed jobs within the health related fields.
The demand for new doctors and healthcare providers will be more acute as California implements the Affordable Care Act and thousands of Inland Southern California residents become eligible for healthcare coverage, many for the first time.
I am overjoyed we received the funding the school needs and our region deserves. Congratulations to the inaugural class of the UC Riverside School of Medicine!
Senior Scam Stopper Seminar
Attendees at the Senior Scam Stopper Seminar in Moreno Valley receive helpful materials on how to effectively avoid scams and protect themselves.
On Wednesday, July 17 my office and the California State License Board hosted a Senior Scam Stopper Seminar at the Moreno Valley Senior Center. The seminar consisted of a panel of experts from the California State License Board, the Department of California Bureau of Automotive Repair and the Public Utilities Commission. Also in attendance was the District Attorney’s office division on Elder Abuse. During our seminar, the panel of experts discussed ways to prevent identity theft and home loan fraud, as well as identified home and auto repair scams. Participants were given an opportunity to have their questions answered.
The event was well-attended and received. Useful and easy to understand materials were made available by the panel and District Attorney’s office. The event was such a success we are currently working on bringing the Senior Scam Stopper Seminar to other senior centers within the district.
VOTING RIGHTS ACT ANNIVERSARY
This year marks the 48th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was signed on August 6 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It is arguably the most significant civil rights law of the 20th century.
This historic act outlawed the common discriminatory practices which disenfranchised many African Americans.
On this day, join me in remembering the struggles those before us faced to ensure rights for all Americans and please make sure to exercise your right to vote at every opportunity.
WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY
On August 26, 2013 we celebrate Women's Equality Day. On August 26, 1920, women were finally granted the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment. The amendment was drafted by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, leaders of the women's suffrage movement.
Women's Equality Day was the culmination of the dream Abigail Adams first noted in letters to her husband, John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers and the second president of the United States, when she decried, "and what about the ladies, Mr. Adams? Do they not deserve the right to participate in government decisions that affect their lives as well?"
Join me in remembering a time when our nation came together to secure the fundamental right of voting.
