An Inland Empire lawmaker’s bill to secure $15 million dollars in annual state funding for the UC Riverside School of Medicine has cleared it’s first legislative hurdle. AB 27 was approved with bipartisan support by the Assembly Higher Education Committee this week and is now bound for the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
The bill was authored by Riverside Assembly Democrat, Jose Medina, who says the biggest issue that this bill addresses is the shortage of doctors in the Inland Empire. An Assembly analysis of Medina’s bill noted that the preferred ratio of doctors to patients is 80 per 100,000 people in any region; the Inland Empire has about half that many doctors per 100,000 people.
