Assemblymember Jose Medina Responds to the Governor’s Proposed Budget

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside), Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, released the following statement on Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s proposed 2017-18 Budget:

“The Governor's budget proposal includes a modest increase to California’s institutions of higher education and a commitment to student success programs. However, more needs to be done to ensure student preparedness. We need to help students pay for their higher education. With the planned phase-out of the Middle Class Scholarship Program and the possible tuition increases at UC and CSU, many future students will lack access to the financial resources they need.

While I applaud the Governor’s efforts to address student success at our colleges and universities, the state has a responsibility to ensure that higher education remains affordable to all students. The January budget is merely the initial framework for a longer, much needed discussion. I look forward to working with the Governor and my colleagues to continue addressing higher education affordability.”
