Legislation to Increase Access to Health and Social Services Passes State Assembly
SACRAMENTO— Today, Assemblymember Jose Medina’s (D-Riverside) bill, AB 2933, was approved by the Assembly with 56-0 vote and bi-partisan support.
AB 2933 would help support California’s 2.1 million community college students by strengthening the connection between college campuses and county services.
The bill would require counties to designate a liaison in social services, health, and mental health departments for academic counselors at community colleges. The liaison would serve as a point of contact on behalf of the county for college counselors and recommend appropriate support services for students.
“Mental health is a critical issue at our college campuses, yet due to a lack of funding and resources, our students often don’t receive the services they need,” said Assemblymember Jose Medina. “AB 2933 would build upon the existing relationship students have with their academic counselors to help better connect them to the proper health counseling services they require.”
