(Riverside, CA) — Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) hosted the fourth annual Gabriel Acosta Memorial Journalism and Communications Workshop at Riverside City College.
Designed for high school and community college students interested in multiple fields of communications. Participants were shown fundamental communications and critical thinking skillsto prepare them for advance study or careers in the media along with a variety of topics including photography, videography, business and professional communication, editing, public speaking, television, social media and radio news.
The workshop honors the memory of Gabriel Acosta, a career photojournalist who dedicated time to encouraging and mentoring students in the field of journalism. Assemblymember Medina was joined by Gabriel's brother Mark who is also a journalist for the Riverside Press-Enterprise.
"Without strong journalists, without strong newspapers, without strong news outlets our democracy is weakened," Assemblymember Medina said of the importance of fostering interest in the field.
