Inland Supporters Happy with President but Expect More in Second Term

Barack Hussein Obama officially began his second term as the 44th president Sunday, with the 57th inauguration happening the next day coinciding with Martin Luther King Day.

The Constitution mandates the president be sworn in Jan. 20, and when the date falls on a Sunday, the public ceremony traditionally is held the next day. President Obama recited the 35-word oath of office administered by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. surrounded by family and friends.

STATE OF THE STATE: Brown lays out agenda

SACRAMENTO – Overhauling the school-funding system. Changing the state's enterprise zone program. Keeping a tight lid on spending. And, with a quotation from a 16th century French writer, making the case that lawmakers should cut down on their lawmaking.

Gov. Jerry Brown laid out his policy wish list for the coming year on Thursday, Jan. 24, during a 24-minute State of the State address in which he declared, "California is back, its budget is balanced, and we are on the move.

Gov. Jerry Brown: California's Budget Deficit is Gone

CALIFORNIA - Gov. Jerry Brown said this past week that California faces no budget deficit for the first time since the recession.

He maintained that the state still faces fiscal risks, but that California's new budget, "…is a breakthrough."

A balanced budget for California is good news for the state's institutions of higher education. The University of California and California State University systems will receive an additional $250 million in the proposed budget which would restore cuts made during the fiscal crisis.

Honoring the Dream candlelight prayer vigil set

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for peace and equality for all. Healthy Heritage Movement will celebrate Dr. King's life and legacy at its third annual 'Honoring the Dream' Candle Light Prayer Vigil.

Founder and CEO Phyllis Y. Clark shares in keeping Dr. King's dream alive by bringing community leaders and citizens together to pray for this region. The ceremony takes place Monday, January 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the City Hall breezeway, directly across from Dr. King's monument on the corners of Main and Ninth streets in downtown Riverside.

Assemblymember Jose Medina Assigned to Key Assembly Committees

Riverside County's 61st District Assemblymember, Jose Medina (D-Riverside) recently received several influential committee assignments by Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles).

Medina was appointed as the Chair of the Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy. He also serves in the Accountability and Administrative Review Committee as well as the committees on Governmental Organization, and Higher Education.
